SAN BERNARDINO (Jan. 23, 2016) -- For the second straight game, CSUSB found victory on a 3-point shot with time running out.
This time, senior
Juan Martinez delivered the goods, hitting from outside on the left corner with five seconds left, giving the Coyotes a 72-71 win over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills at Coussoulis Arena on Baker's Pack the Gym Night.
CSUSB won its third straight game and improved to 7-9 overall and 4-8 in the CCAA. CSUDH dropped to 9-10, 3-8.
The Coyotes fought back from an 11-point deficit in the first half with a sound offensive game in the final half. They fired 60 percent on 15-of-25 shooting, but needed Martinez's heroics for the win.
A seven-point Coyotes' lead with 2:07 left dwindled when the Toros scored nine straight points and led 71-69 on a Vincent Golson jumper with 11 seconds left.
CSUSB brought the ball quickly up court against pressure, and
Keith Smith found Martinez open in the left corner. The senior fired up the shot and it dropped down for a three and the Coyotes had their lead at 72-71.
Golson tried to give the Toros the win at the buzzer, but his 3-point attempt was off.
Smith led four Coyotes in double figures with 19 points and a perfect 5-of-5 from the line.
Everett Turner had 18 with three 3s and also was perfect in five free throw attempts.
Desi Barmore had 12 with three blocks and sophomore
Darryl Adigwu, who the game-winning three the night before against Cal State L.A., had 10 points with two threes.
Turner's 3-pointer and layup in the final minute of the first half allowed the Coyotes to pull within two of the Toros' lead after trailing by 11 with 10:23 remaining in the first half.
In the second, CSUSB took the lead when
Zeke DeBlase's jumper started a 9-1 run that put the Coyotes up 15:03 remaining. They eventually led by nine and seemed in control, until the Toros got going late.
Golson led the Toros with 17.
