SAN BERNARDINO (Jan. 22, 2016) — Bench strength came through for the Coyotes on Friday night against Cal State L.A. and senior
Adriana Brodie nearly earned a school record.
Brodie came of the bench and successfully hit on her first eight attempts from the floor, before missing her final shot in the waning moments for a career-high 21 points, and fellow senior
Bisera Peshkova drained three 3-pointers for a season-high 11 points in the Coyotes' 70-53 victory at Coussoulis Arena.
Brodie accomplished her power inside and had a shot for the school record of 9-of-9 night held by Jennifer Johnson against UC Davis on Dec. 19, 1994, but her shot was too strong off the rim with 40 seconds left. She also hit 5 of 6 free throws with a team-high eight rebounds in 27 minutes.
Peshkova hit eight of her 11 points in a pivotal third quarter that put the Coyotes in complete control after trailing at the half 34-31.
Down 41-39 with 5:49 left in the third, Peshkova hit her second trey of the night and that triggered a 16-4 run and placed the Coyotes in firm control. Brodie also scored eight points in the quarter as CSUSB hit 9 of 15 for 60 percent in the 10-minute period and 50 percent (16-32) for the second half.
Senior
Sophie Bhasin added 12 points with a game-high five assists and three steals. All told, the Coyotes had 18 assists on 26 field goals.
Brianna Harden scored eight points and
Chelsea Barnes seven.
CSUSB (10-5 overall, 7-4 CCAA) was solid in the second half on the defensive end as well, holding the Golden Eagles to only 19 points and just six in the fourth quarter.
CSULA (4-12, 2-8) was led by Rikke Fabricius with 14 points.
The Coyotes return to Coussoulis on Saturday night against league leader Cal State Dominguez Hills.
