Keith Smith led CSUSB with 13 points, but No. 5 Cal Poly Pomona was too strong in its 82-72 win at Coussoulis Arena on Friday night.
Jordan Faison had game-highs with 17 points and 10 rebounds as CPP (12-0, 5-0 CCAA) shot 56 percent from the field in the second half.
The Coyotes (3-6, 0-5) played a spirited first half and trailed 37-35 at halftime. They outscored the Broncos 13-7 at the free throw line to stay within a one-possession game.
But coach Greg Kamansky's Broncos came out of the gates on a 14-2 run in the first three and a half minutes of the half and led by double digits the rest of the game. CPP led as many as 20 points with 5:19 left before the Coyotes outscored the Broncos 15-5 to finish the game.
Senior G Barry Bell scored seven of the Broncos' 14 points in that stretch and finished with 11.
Senior
Zeke DeBlase scored 11 points with five assists for CSUSB. Fellow seniors
Juan Martinez and
Desi Barmore each had 10.
Smith also had five assists. The Coyotes exhibited good teamwork with 18 assists on 22 field goals.
Jordan Williams and
Brandon Staton each had eight points,while freshman
Brian Gugliotta had six on two 3-pointers -- his first points of his college career.
The Coyotes entertain Humboldt State at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.
