Bhasin lifts Coyotes to upset victory

HAYWARD (Jan. 16, 2016) -- One night after losing a one-point game, CSUSB turned the tide with a signature victory in 2015-16.

Down five points with under two minutes to go, CSUSB scored seven straight points and senior Sophie Bhasin hit a big-time 3-pointer late as it defeated host Cal State East Bay 64-63 in CCAA women's basketball Saturday night.

CSUSB won for the sixth time in its last eight games and improved to 9-5 overall and 6-4 in the CCAA. CSUEB (13-4, 7-2), which entered the weekend unbeaten in league play through seven games, was dealt its second straight CCAA loss.

The victory was a sweet one for the Coyotes, who experienced their only one-sided loss on the season against the Pioneers, who won the Dec. 1 contest 76-55 at Coussoulis Arena. The other four Coyotes losses this season are by a combined five points.

CSUSB used two sizeable runs in the first half -- an 11-0 output in the first quarter and a 17-1 spurt in the second -- for a 35-26 halftime lead over the Pioneers. In the second quarter, Bhasin scored eight of her team-high 19 points over a 2 1/2-minute span for the Coyotes' edge.

An Alexcia Mack jumper put the Coyotes ahead at their largest margin, 44-29 with 7 minutes remaining in the third.

But CSUEB answered strong and pulled to their first lead since the first half on two free throws by Ashleigh Anderson and the Pioneers up 56-54 with 2:27 remaining in the game.

Down 59-54 with 1:58 left, CSUSB got its act together in impressive manner. Chelsea Barnes scored on a three-point play, and Chelsea Austin and Bhasin each scored put-back baskets and the Coyotes led 61-59 with 30 seconds left.

Shannon Bland then tied the game on a layup, and that set up Bhasin's heroics.

She came down the court and ripped a 3-pointer for a 64-61 lead with six seconds left. The Coyotes then eliminated any chance for a 3-pointer when they sent Madison Craig to the line with four seconds left. She hit both free throws, but it wasn't enough to stop the Coyotes' upset bid.

Bhasin was 8 of 16 with three 3-pointers and five rebounds. Barnes had 14 points and Mack 12. Brianna Harden added seven points with seven rebounds and reserve Summer Ramsey contributed six points.

The Coyotes shot 48.1 percent from the floor and outrebounded the much-bigger Pioneers by a 31-27 mark.

Bland led the Pioneers with a game-high 26 points.
