GOLDEN, Colo. (Sept. 4, 2015) -- The 19th-ranked Coyotes earned a pair of victories over West Region foes in their season opening weekend at the Oredigger Classic, hosted by Colorado School of Mines on Friday.
CSUSB defeated Western Oregon 3-1 and earned a 3-2 win over last season's NCAA West Region host and current 10th-ranked Northwest Nazarene.
The Coyotes complete the weekend tourney with matches against Colorado Christian and the eighth-ranked host school Saturday.
Coyotes 3, Northwest Nazarene 2
Senior All-American Brenna McIntosh showed her talent with 12 kills, one solo block and 10 block assists in the 5-set win over the Crusaders (25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 15-25, 15-5).
Senior OH Alexandra Torline added 11 kills and fellow senior OH Kaitlyn Christner had 10.
The match featured 22 tie scores and eight lead changes.
CSUSB earned the opener with four tie scores late in the set. Down 23-22, Torline tied the set with a kill and the Coyotes moved ahead with an attack error. After a NNU timeout, McIntosh and Torline teamed by a block.
NNU rallied with a four-point run in the second for a 20-18 lead and remained out front to tie the set.
Six kills from Christner helped the Coyotes, who never trailed in the third set. They hit .216 and converted 63 percent on sideouts (14 of 22) for a 2-1 lead.
NNU bounced back to tie the match, winning the fourth thanks to 12 block assists. The Coyotes didn't help themselves with four service errors.
But it didn't matter as McIntosh fired off three kills with a solo block and the Coyotes did not have an attack error in the decisive fifth set.
Freshman Jayann DeHoog had 40 assists and three Coyotes had double digit digs -- Hannah Barrett (17), Torline (15) and DeHoog (11).
Christner had seven block assists with a solo block.
Coyotes 3, Western Oregon 1
The Coyotes grabbed the lead from the get-go in their match against Western Oregon, never trailing in the first set and forced two negative hitting percentage in the 25-11, 25-22, 23-25, 25-15 win.
Torline led CSUSB with 14 kills in 37 attacks, and McIntosh had 12 kills in 21 attacks with five block assists. Solis was next in line in kills with seven.
The Coyotes were strong on the defensive end wtih 58 digs, and Barrett leading with 22. Torline had eight and Christner and senior Ashley Solis each had seven.
CSUSB had 22 blocks assists with Malika O'Brien leading with six and Solis adding four.
CSUSB hit .333 in the opener with Torline throwing down seven of her team-high 14 kills.
The set was tied at 16-16 until the Coyotes stretched out a three-point lead thanks to a WOU error, service ace from Abbey Vollkommer and a block assist from Christner and O'Brien.
CSUSB had a shot at the sweep when a Torline kill tied the set at 23-23. But a WOU kill and a CSUSB attack error gave the Wolves the win.
But in the fourth, the Coyotes grabbed the lead at 4-3 and rolled to the 25-15 win.
