Box Score LOS ANGELES (April 23, 2015) -- The 2015 season has been a tough one for the Coyotes, but Thursday night offered a definite bright spot.
Sophomore RHP
Tyler Wells dominated host Cal State L.A., striking out 12 and giving up only two hits in 7.2 innings in CSUSB's 5-2 win in CCAA baseball.
The Coyotes (10-32, 8-26 CCAA) and Golden Eagles (23-18, 18-15) resume their series Friday afternoon at Fiscalini Field. First pitch is 2 p.m.
Wells gave up just two doubles -- one in the second and one in the eighth -- and retired 10 straight at one point.
CSUSB scored twice in the first inning for a lead it would not relinquish.
Aaron Owen reached base on a one-out single to left, and
Warren Fishback followed with a double to left that brought up
Trevor Williams.
Williams secured an RBI on a fielder's choice and
Grant Buchanan earned the other RBI on an infield ground out.
In the second,
Dillon Fahr scored after reaching base on an error by the center fielder, then scampered across on an error by the shorstop.
Damion Edmonds singled and he later scored on a ground out by Owen and CSUSB led 4-0.
Owen drove in the Coyotes' final roun on a single through the left side in the fourth.
The 4-0 lead was more than enough for Wells, who started his dominant streak with a ground out to end the third. In the 10-man streak, he struck out three and CSULA did not have a base runner until a leadoff walk in the seventh.
Dakota Johnson stopped the shutout bid with a two-run double in the eighth. Senior reliever
Ruben Rios came on in relief, got an out to the first batter he faced in the eighth, then had three strikeouts in the ninth by facing just four batters.
Owen and
Jose Hernandez each had two hits for the Coyotes, who outhit the Golden Eagles, 8-2.
