Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO (Feb. 20, 2015) -- Something special took place Friday afternoon that a young Coyotes softball team will build upon for quite some time.
CSUSB stunned No. 3-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay 11-3 in a game called after five innings due to the eight-run rule. The victory snapped the Otters' eight-game winning streak; a streak that included five victories by the eight-run rule.
The Coyotes lost the opener 5-1 with All-American Nicole Nobbe ending the Otters' shutout bid by RHP Cori Reinhardt with a home run in the seventh.
CSUSB (9-6, 1-1 CCAA) and CSUMB (8-1, 1-1) return to Coyote Park on Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
Game 1: Otters 5, Coyotes 1
CSUMB broke a scoreless tie with a four-run fifth inning for the victory.
Nobbe led the Coyotes with a 3-for-3 game with two singles, an intentional walk, and a solo home run to right field in the top of the seventh.
Victoria Lievanos had two hits including a double. No other Coyote had an extra-base hit.
Madison Casto and Courtney Varela each had three hits for the Otters.
Game 2: Coyotes 11, Otters 3 5 innings
The Otters grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning before freshman RHP Jamie Nelson settled down. She earned the victory by pitching four shutout innings and giving up only three hits over the final four frames.
This was a game where a multitude of Coyotes stepped up in the fourth inning. They sent 12 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs on six hits.
Alyssa Ramos led off with a single and Kaylee Gemmell followed with a double. That put freshman Caitlyn Olan to the plate and she ripped a monstrous three-run homer to straight away center and the Coyotes tied the game at 3-3.
Arianna Hernandez followed with a single and two outs later, Nobbe was walked for the third time in the game. Melissa Roberts came through with a run-scoring single to center and Lievanos came up with a two-run double to left and CSUSB led 6-3.
Ramos then doubled to center to bring in Lievanos and the Coyotes had their 7-3 lead.
In the fifth, Hernandez led off with a double and Quintana reached on a hit by pitch. Mary Menicucci also was hit by pitch and that brought up Nobbe with the bases loaded with no outs.
What took place next speaks volumes about Nobbe's threat as one of the nation's best hitters. Rather than pitch to Nobbe (who is hitting .674) with the sacks full of Coyotes, reliever Bianca Noriega threw a wild pitch far outside the strike zone and that brought in Hernandez, and left first base open.
Nobbe then was walked for the fourth time, and the Otters found out the Coyotes have many others who are more than up to the task of driving in runs in crucial situations.Â
Roberts ripped a two-run single up the middle for a 10-3 lead and two batters later, Gemmell ended the game on an RBI-single up the middle.
Nelson scattered six hits and had one strikeouts with two walks.
