LOS ANGELES (December 18, 2015) -- Duce Zaid's jumper with two seconds remaining lifted host Cal State L.A. past the Coyotes 84-82 in CCAA men's basketball Friday night.
The loss was CSUSB's third straight in CCAA play and it takes a 3-4 overall record and 0-3 conference record into Saturday night's game at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Anthony January led the Coyotes with 28 points, and
Aaron Cheatum and
Brandon Staton reached double figures with 13 and 11, respectively.
The Coyotes fought back from an 11-point second-half deficit and tied the game at 82-82 on a January basket with 14 seconds remaining.
But Zaid came down the court and hit a jumper of his own and lifted the Golden Eagles to their first home win over the Coyotes since Dec. 3, 2010. The victory also was CSULA's first in the last nine meetings.
CSUSB hurt itself at the line, hitting only 61.5 percent for the game (24 of 39). For CSULA (2-8, 1-2), it missed just three shots in 27 attempts from the line.
Zeke DeBlase hit a key 3-pointer with 50 seconds left that cut CSULA's lead to 82-80. A missed layup from Joshua Munzon gave the Coyotes possession and January delivered on the jumper to tie late.
DeBlase finished with nine points and four assists wtih six rebounds. Cheatum also had six boards.
The Coyotes remained within striking distance of the Golden Eagles, thanks to their 25 points off turnovers. But CSULA countered with 18 second-chance points and a 42-30 rebounding advantage.
Munzon finished with 19.
