LA JOLLA (Nov. 28, 2015) -- CSUSB's Big Five came through in the Coyotes' 70-68 nonconference victory against Dominican on Saturday afternoon.
Seniors
Chelsea Austin (16),
Adriana Brodie (11),
Brianna Harden (11) and
Alexcia Mack (10) reached double figures in scoring and Austin earned a double-double with 10 rebounds against the Penguins.
This was a back-and-forth game with 18 lead changes and 11 ties. CSUSB gained control over its foe with 16 points in the paint in the third quarter and remained out front in the game's final 14 minutes.
Trailing 49-47 with 4:33 remaining in the third, the Coyotes took over with an impressive 14-4 run to close the quarter. Barnes triggered the run with consecutive baskets, and a layup from
Loli Gomez gave CSUSB a 53-49 lead. Brodie and Harden followed with field goals of their own and
Sophie Bhasin added a jumper to put CSUSB up 59-52 with 1:03 left.
Mack then closed the quarter with jumper with one second left and CSUSB led 61-53.
CSUSB maintained an eight-point cushion with 4:55 to go, but Dominican mounted a comeback. A layup from Barnes gave the Coyotes a 70-66 advantage with 1:55 left and Sandra Ikeora cut their lead to two with 31 seconds left.
CSUSB held the ball down the stretch and after Barnes missed a layup with two seconds to go, Dominican called timeout. After the break, it was called for a team turnover and time ran out.
Bhasin added five points with three assists and senior
Bisera Peshkova had five points with a team-high four assists in just 14 minutes off the bench.
CSUSB (3-1 overall) begins CCAA play Tuesday against Cal State East Bay at Coussoulis Arena.
Alyssa Weatherd led Dominican with 15 points. The Penguins remained in the game thanks to their 19-of-21 effort from the free throw line.
