SAN BERNARDINO (Nov. 21, 2015) – The Coyotes grabbed control in the first half and never looked back in their 76-53 victory over Montana State-Billings at Coussoulis Arena on Saturday night.
CSUSB (2-0 overall) took a 13-point lead at the break and never broke stride. Four Coyotes, led by former Cajon HS standout
Sophie Bhasin's 17 points off the bench, reached double figures in the 23-point rout over the Yellowjackets.
Bhasin added six assists, while senior
Chelsea Barnes popped 14 points with seven rebounds. Fellow seniors
Adriana Brodie and
Alexcia Mack each scored 11 points in starting roles.
Chelsea Austin played a sound all-round game with eight points, eight rebounds and six blocks.
CSUSB shot 51 percent from the field (28 of 55) and 36 percent from beyond the arc (9 of 25). Mack and Bhasin each hit three 3-pointers. The Coyotes made 84 percent of their free throws (11 of 13).
Guard Rylee Kane led the Yellowjackets with 15 points, hitting seven of 11 shots from the floor.
After a tight first quarter in which CSUSB led 17-15, the Coyotes broke it open, outscoring the visitors 20-9 for a 37-24 halftime lead. The lead expanded slightly to 15 at 52-37 at the end of three periods. CSUSB then outscored Montana State Billings 17-6 in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter for a 69-43 lead and both coaches substituted freely the rest of the way.
The Coyotes return Nov. 27-28 to face Azusa Pacific and Dominican University in the UC San Diego tournament in La Jolla.
