SAN BERNARDINO (Oct. 6, 2015) — No. 23 Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Monterey Bay will play three times against each other in the month of October, and Round 1 went to the Coyotes in a 3-1 decision at Coussoulis Arena on Tuesday night.
Behind senior OH
Alexandra Torline's 15 kills and 15 digs, the Coyotes earned a 25-17, 25-12, 23-25, 25-23 victory over the Otters and remained unbeaten against their foe in all 24 of their all-time matches.
Torline led four Coyotes (13-3, 6-2 CCAA) in double figures with
Lauren Nicholson (12), All-American
Brenna McIntosh (11) and
Malika O'Brien (10).
CSUSB had things going its way through the first two sets and led 22-19 in the third before the Otters (4-9, 3-5) righted the ship.
A block assists and a Coyote attack error forced the Coyotes into a timeout at 22-21. After the break, Anela Visesio tied the set with a kill, but Torline answered with one of her own and the Coyotes led 23-22.
But Victoria Clardy tied the set at 23-all and the Otters' Jessica Malcolm brought the final two kills of the set and CSUMB forced a fourth set.
CSUSB took control in the fourth, leading 14-7, but the Otters proved they weren't going away. They went a 5-0 run capped by two service aces from Ciara Reistad.
The Coyotes remained out front and eventually built the lead to two at 20-18 after a Nicholson kill and a CSUMB attack error.
CSUMB then answered with an impressive 4-1 run and led 22-21 on a kill from Ashlynne Armstrong.
The Coyotes called timeout and scored three straight points — a ball handling error a solo block from O'Brien and another CSUMB attack error — to lead 24-22.
After an attack error from Torline, she came right back with a kill of her own for the set and match winner.
On the night, Torline became the Coyotes' all-time points leader, surpassing Jessica Granados' record of 1,549.5 set from 2005-08. Torline will take her record of 1574 into Friday night's match against San Francisco State.
Freshman
