Torline stands out in 3-2 win over No. 12 WWU

Junior OH Alexandra Torline's 27 kills against WWU were the most by a Coyote in 5 seasons.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Sept. 06, 2014) -- Alexandra Torline produced a career night with 27 kills and the Coyotes needed every one of them in a thrilling 3-2 victory over No. 12 Western Washington to close play in the Hampton Inn Wildcat Invitational on Saturday.
 
Toline's effort marked the most kills by a Coyote since All-American Jane Chafeh had 29 against Cal Baptist during the 2009 season.
 
CSUSB (3-1), which earlier Saturday defeated Saint Martin's 3-0, begins CCAA play Friday night at Cal State East Bay.

Down 2-0 against the Vikings, CSUSB rallied for its 26-28, 17-25, 25-19, 25-14, 15-11 victory.
 
Torline had nine kills in the third set and senior libero Arielle McCullough had 10 of her 29 digs in a set that CSUSB led from the outset.
 
In the fourth set, junior defensive specialist Jordan Ortega played a pivotal role. Leading 17-14 and with Ortega serving, CSUSB finished off the Vikings on eight unanswered points with Ortega throwing down three aces in that stretch and the match was tied at 2-2.
 
Four ties occurred in the early going of the fifth set until the Coyotes nudged ahead with Torline's help. She had consecutive kills and Tori May added another and CSUSB led 8-5 with WWU taking a timeout to stop the momentum.
 
But the Coyotes never let the lead dip below two points down the stretch and with the lead at 14-11, Torline threw her 27th and final kill for the match winner.
 
The Coyotes hit .309 for the match on the strength of 72 kills, 17 errors in 178 attacks. May had 17 kills and two others reached double digits -- Brenna McIntosh (11) and Ashley Solis (10).
 
Defensively, McCullough's 29 digs keyed three others in double figures as the Coyotes totaled 89 for the category. Torline had 16 with Abbey Vollkommer 12 and Ortega 10.
 
McIntosh had three solo blocks and Ortega had four service aces. Sophomore settter Hannah Liseraa had 69 assists.
 
WWU had two with at least 20 kills -- Rachel Roeder with 24 and Kelsey Moore 20.
 
Coyotes 3, Saint Martin's 0
 
CSUSB fired an impressive .379 attack percentage with just five errors in their 25-19, 25-17, 25-20 victory over the Saints (1-3).
 
McIntosh led the Coyotes with 12 kills and May had 10, while Torline had nine – six in the first set.
 
CSUSB hit .520 in the opening set in which it did not trail and had only one attack error.
 
Both McCullough and Torline had 12 digs.
