Box Score 2 | ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Sept. 6, 2014) -- No. 8 Cal State San Bernardino made its 2014 debut a successful one with a back-and-forth 3-1 victory over Hawaii Pacific at the Hampton Inn Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Central Washington.
The Coyotes complete Friday's play with a 3-1 loss against host Central Washington.
Senior All-American MB Tori May featured the match against HPU with 10 kills and a .429 attack percentage and fellow All-American MB Brenna McIntosh keyed three solo blocks and six block assists in the 24-26, 26-24, 25-18, 28-26 victory over the Sharks from the Pacific West Conference.
The ebb-and-flow of the match had 29 ties and 11 lead changes, but the Coyotes found the way to earn the four-set victory.
HPU scored the final six points of the first set for a 1-0 lead, before CSUSB came through in the second set to tie the match.
CSUSB grabbed a 10-1 lead after a service ace from Kaitlyn Christner, but HPU rallied with an impressive 16-6 run and led 17-16.
Kills from Christner and Ashley Solis seemed to stop HPU's momentum, but the Sharks forged ahead and led 23-19.
CSUSB struck back with kills from Alexandra Torline and McIntosh. After an HPU attack error, McIntosh fired off a block and the set was tied at 23-23.
Both teams traded a point, but a kill from McIntosh and one from Christner gave the Coyotes the set and tied the match.
CSUSB never trailed in the third set as May and Solis each had four kills and senior libero Arielle McCullough had nine of her 18 digs in the set.
The fourth and final set had 12 ties and the largest lead either team had was three on two occasions by the Coyotes.
Consecutive attack errors by the Sharks gave the Coyotes a 23-21 lead, but CSUSB had two of its own and coach Kim Cherniss took a timeout with the set tied at 23-23.
Christner had two kills late to tie the set at 25-all and 26-apiece. After an HPU attack error, the Coyotes had their victory on a kill from Solis, courtesy of an assist from May.
Torline and Christner each had 11 kills and sophomore setter Hannah Liserra had 38 assists. The Coyotes, however, struggled on the serve with 17 service errors.

The Coyotes were dealt a 17-25, 25-21, 21-25, 23-25 defeat at the hands of the host Wildcats to close out play Friday.
McIntosh led CSUSB in kills with 13 and May with 11, but again, the Coyotes struggled on serving with 18 errors.
Four Coyotes had double figure dig nights -- McCullough leading with 25, followed by Ciara Richards 14, Jordan Ortega 12 and Solis 11.
The Coyotes complete the weekend Saturday with matches against Saint Martin's and Western Washington.
CWU's Linden Firethorne had 17 kills with just two errors and finished with a .306 attack percentage.
