Steve Ralos era with a resounding 4-1 nonconference season opener over host Academy of Art in men's soccer.
Senior
Juan Carlos Gonzalez led the way for CSUSB with two goals, and freshmen
Alfonso Cano and
Tony Lo each had one in a game that completely belonged to the Blue and Black.
"It was a good game today from the boys,'' said Ralos, who is in his first year with CSUSB. "Lots of positives today and we'll move on, enjoy this one and get ready for Saturday.''
Lo got the Coyotes rolling early on in the 11
th minute when he found an open look at the net after the goalkeeper came out high. CSUSB remained out front 1-0 at the break, and then got cooking with three second-half goals.
Gonzalez, who led the Coyotes in scoring last season, extended the lead in the 47
th minute.
Diego Mendoza fired in a shot that was saved, but Gonzalez deflected the ball from 12 yards out and CSUSB had its 2-0 lead.
After AAU broke through with its only goal of the game about two minutes later, Gonzalez earned his second tally on the day – this time in the 74
th minute. Teammate
Larry Llamas took the ball to the baseline inside the box and Gonzalez fired in from 10 yards out on an open net.
Then about five minutes later, Cano scored unassisted after a blocked shot.
CSUSB fired 17 shots on the day with 10 SOG. It had four corners in the first half.
Junior GK
Ivan Sanchez earned the start in the nets and had three saves. CSUSB had two team saves.
CSUSB completes the first weekend of play when it takes on Dominican University on Saturday. Kickoff is 12:00 p.m.
'Yote notes – The game was the first time the two schools have met … The Coyotes' four goals are the most scored in a season opener since a 5-1 win over Notre Dame de Namur on Aug. 28, 2009.
