No. 7 Coyotes dealt rare loss

All-American Tori May had 16 kills with seven block assists.
Box Score SAN FRANCISCO (Sept. 19, 2014) -- A long-standing winning streak came to a close Friday night for No. 7 CSUSB.

Despite Alexandra Torline's match-high 21 kills, the Coyotes had their 28-match winning streak that dated back to 1992 came to an end in a 3-2 loss against host San Francisco State in CCAA play.

Down 1-0, the Coyotes played inspired ball with only two attack errors in their next two matches and led 2-1.

But SFSU came right back and won the final two sets for the 25-20, 19-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-12 victory.

All-American Tori May had an outstanding night, hitting .483 on the strength of 16 kills, 2 errors in 29 attacks and seven block assists. Kaitlyn Christner was the only Coyote in double figure kills with 12.

All-American MB Brenna McIntosh had nine kills and hit .368 with two solo blocks and three block assists.

SFSU (4-4, 2-1) received double figure kills from five players, led by Melissa Horton and Kaileen Mejia with 16 each.

The fourth set was back-and-forth with 14 ties and three lead changes. SFSU forged ahead late 24-20 before the Coyotes closed the gap with three straight points -- a block asssist from May and Ashley Solis, an SFSU attack error and a kill from May. But the set went to SFSU on a kill by Mejia.

A kill from Torline gave the Coyotes a 12-11 lead in the fifth, but SFSU strung together four straight points for the victory, its first over CSUSB since a 3-2 win on Oct. 24, 1992.

Senior L Arielle McCullough had 20 digs to lead in double figures. Sophomore S Hannah Liserra had 11 digs along with 53 assists and Jordan Ortega had 12 digs.

CSUSB (5-2, 2-1) concludes the weekend at Sonoma State on Saturday night.
