Pivotal teamwork pays off for No. 25 Coyotes

Senior MF Susan Ibarra provided the game-winning goal against CBU.
Box Score SAN BERNARDINO (Sept. 20, 2014) -- The campuses of Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Baptist are just 18 miles apart. And since the Riverside school became a Division II school, the two schools have developed a rivalry that exhibits quality play by both schools.

Senior Susan Ibarra positioned herself to make a play early in the first half and it was the difference in a 1-0 victory for the 25th-ranked Coyotes.

CSUSB earned a throw-in in the 13th minute with sophomore Jessica Koch putting the ball in play on the right-side of the CBU net. Her high throw was controlled by Kiana Quarles, and Ibarra followed with a close shot from five yards out.

That was all the scoring on a day between two schools who met a year ago in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament with CSUSB winning on PKs.

"Jessica threw in a nice ball and Kiana got in a spot where I could make a play,'' Ibarra said. "It was a case of being in the right place at the right time.''

CSUSB improved its record-setting start to seven straight victories entering Friday night's CCAA opener at Cal Poly Pomona.

The fact that the Coyotes held CBU (2-4) to just four shots was not overlooked by head coach Travis Clarke.

"It's a positive holding them to four shots,'' he said. "Defensively, we worked extremely hard to limit what they wanted to do. We were prepared and give our girls all the credit with them executing in style.''

GK Emily Whyte had two saves as CBU mustered just three SOG.

The goal was Ibarra's second on the season.
