Williams spins 1-hitter in doubleheader sweep

Cassandra Williams threw a 1-hitter in the opener, then added a 2-run HR in the second.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO – A late season push toward postseason is serving as motivation as host Cal State San Bernardino swept San Francisco State 11-0 and 7-3 in CCAA softball Friday afternoon at Coyote Park.

The Coyotes (27-21 overall and 14-16 CCAA) and Gators (17-32, 8-22) complete their four-game series Saturday at 11 a.m.

Game 1: Coyotes 11, SFSU 0 5 innings
CSUSB, ranked eighth in this week's NCAA West Regional poll, came out with a vengeance in the opener as freshman LHP Cassandra Williams gave up a lead-off single to open the game, then did not allow another hit for a 1-hit shutout.

And just for good measure, the Coyotes' big bats of Nicole Nobbe and Tiffany McIntosh made sure the team had more than enough offensive flash.

Nobbe and Victoria Lievanos plated RBI hits in the first for a 2-0 lead through one inning and that set the tone in the decisive second inning.

Williams and Melissa Roberts reached base on consecutive singles, and two outs later, Alyssa Ramos reached on an error by the left fielder.

That opened up the inning as Nobbe connected on a RBI-double to left, and McIntosh ripped her 14th home run of the season, a three-run shot over the left-field wall. She needs one more homer to tie the school record held by Britney Butler in 2012.

Williams finished the game at the plate, going 2-for-3 and scored in the third on a stolen base.

CSUSB plated three runs in the fourth to push the lead to 11-0. McIntosh had an RBI-double, Lievanos scored on a stolen base and Mary Menicucci came through with a run-scoring single to right.

Williams had five strikeouts with two walks for her 14th win on the season.

Game 2: Coyotes 7, Gators 3
Lievanos and Williams each had two-run home runs to carry the Coyotes, who never trailed with 15 hits.

Lievanos went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Nobbe went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Nobbe continued her hot hitting with a collective .500 batting average this season (74-for-148). She entered the week as the No. 8 hitter in NCAA Division II.

Stephanie Luhman earned the victory and improved to 12-9 on the season. Williams picked up her fifth save with 2 2/3 innings of relief.
