Coyotes gain split over SFSU

Almodovar, Jipp come through in 4-3 8th inning win

SAN FRANCISCO -- Nolan Almodovar came through with a two-out, run-scoring single in the eighth inning and reliever Brian Jipp finished up two solid innings of relief in the Coyotes' 4-3 victory over SF State in the fourth and final game of their four-game series Sunday afternoon.

The Coyotes (4-15 overall, 4-8 CCAA) steps outside of conference play this week when they take part in the Tucson Invitational, taking on four Northern Sun Conference teams beginning with Southwest Minnesota State on Friday.

Game 1: SF State 4, Coyotes 3

SFSU's Grady Espinosa hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to secure the Gators' third win in as many games vs. CSUSB.

Tied at 2-2 through seven innings, Kevin Meriwether gave the Coyotes a 3-2 lead in the eighth on a two-out double down the left-field line that scored Trevor McMaster, who led off with a single to short.

Meriwether had three singles, while Brian Lockey stood out wiht a 4-for-5 effort with three singles and two RBI.

William Ouellette had a double and a single.

Starter Jake Meloche went eight solid innings for coach Don Parnell's team. He struck out three, walked two and gave up seven hits. All four runs were earned.

Game 2: Coyotes 4, SF State 3 8 innings

The Coyotes and Gators played their third extra-inning game, but this time CSUSB got the upperhand and the much-needed victory.

Tied at 2-2 through six innings, CSUSB gained the lead in the seventh on Ouellette's RBI-single to left that scored Almodovar.

But SFSU came back to tie the game and force extra-innings on David Loud's two-out single to center.

Jipp threw two innings of relief. He earned the win with two strikeouts, no walks and gave up four hits.

Meriwether, Lockey and Ouellette all had two hits for the Coyotes, who totaled 10 for the game.
