Coyotes, split baseball doubleheader

CSUSB earns first victory in opener

RHP Ruben Rios threw 5 solid innings for the victory.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO – The Coyotes snapped their losing streak at six games with a 7-4 victory over visiting Cal State East Bay in the first game of Saturday's CCAA doubleheader at Fiscalini Field.
 
The Pioneers came back in the second game, winning 6-2 in seven innings.
 
The four-game finale takes place at 11 a.m. Sunday at Fiscalini.
 
Game 1: Coyotes 7, Cal State East Bay 4
 
Remington Miller got the Coyotes rolling in the first inning with a two-run double to left center and later scored on an error. Kevin Meriwether began the threat with a leadoff double down the left-field line.
 
After the Pioneers came back with two runs in the third, CSUSB answered with a two-run fourth.
 
Meriwether connected on a one-out single to right center that scored Aaron Beckley and Aaron Owen.
 
In the sixth, Nick Oddo sent a hit a grounder to short that was misplayed and both Meriwether and Warren Fishback scored for two unearned runs and the Coyotes led 7-2.
 
The Pioneers narrowed the gap to 7-4 with two runs in the seventh.
 
RHP Ruben Rios started and earned the victory. He threw 5 innings and allowed five hits, two runs (one earned) and had three strikeouts.
 
Ken Kissell had two strikeouts in two innings and Matt LeVert and Brian Jipp each had a strikeout in one inning apiece.
 
Meriwether finished with three hits. Warren Fishback accounted for the other Coyotes' hit.
 
Game 2: Cal State East Bay 6, Coyotes 2
 
Pioneers starter Nick Hudson went 7 innings and allowed five hits and struck out four for the complete-game victory.
 
The Coyotes scored two runs in the first – both on sacrifice flys; one from Oddo and the other from Richard Mount.
 
Owen had two of the Coyotes' five hits. Meriwether, William Ouellette had the others.
 
Dylan Mitchell (0-2) took the loss. He threw 4 2/3 innings and gave up seven hits and five runs (three earned). He also had three strikeouts.
 
Reliever Tyler Rahier had three strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.
