Box Score LA JOLLA (Nov. 7, 2014) - Defense has proven to be a staple for No. 18 Cal State San Bernardino over the past few years and the Coyotes brought their blocking sleds against UC San Diego.
Six Coyotes contributed a block assist, led by
Brenna McIntosh with six, and junior OH Alexandra Torline accounted for 40 percent of the Coyotes' kills in a 3-1 victory over the Tritons in CCAA play Friday night.
CSUSB (18-5 overall, 15-4 CCAA) brings a five-match winning streak into Saturday night's match at Cal Poly Pomona and is seeking to win for the third time in as many nights.
Torline led with 22 kills -- her eighth match with at least 20 -- in the 25-20, 25-15, 25-27, 25-19 win. She also had four block assists with six digs and a service aces for a match-high 25 points. McIntosh had eight kills and added a pair of solo blocks, and senior MB
Tori May had 11 kills with five block assists.
In the opening set and with sophomore
Abbey Vollkommer serving, the Coyotes placed an 8-0 run in motion with a pair of service aces and a solo block and kill from McIntosh, giving CSUSB a 17-11 lead.
CSUSB defined another substantial run, this time in the second. Leading 15-13, a kill from
Ashley Solis opened a 10-2 run for a one-sided 2-0 lead.
The third set had 13 ties and seven lead changes with the Coyotes leading as late as 25-24 on a Torline kill.
But UCSD earned the set with a pair of attack errors by the Coyotes, forcing a fourth set.
There would be no comeback by the Tritons as CSUSB led the entire fourth set. Torline led with six kills in the set, while eight Coyotes had at least one dig in the set.
Setter
Ciara Richards had 46 assists with nine digs and two block assists. Libero
Arielle McCullough had 20 digs and
Jordan Ortega had 10. After McIntosh's six block assists, May and Solis each had five.
UCSD dropped to 12-11, 10-9.
