Box Score LA JOLLA (Nov. 29, 2014) — Coyotes coach
Renee Jimenez hopes playing through an unbeaten nonconference sets the tone for the rigorous 22-game CCAA schedule that awaits her team.
CSUSB responded with its fourth win in as many games with another impressive victory over a Pacific West Conference team. This time, CSUSB got control early and glided through for an 83-74 victory Saturday afternoon over Academy of Art at the UC San Diego Thanksgiving Classic.
Junior guard
Alexcia Mack earned Tournament MVP honors and led the Coyotes in scoring with a game-high 22 points and three others reached double figures with both
Chelsea Barnes and fellow all-tourney selection
Brianna Harden earning double-doubles. Barnes had 13 points with 15 rebounds and Harden had an 11-point, 10 rebound effort. Senior
Briana Baker added 10 for CSUSB, which utilized a key run midway through the first half and opened up double-digit leads for all but the final minute of the second half.
Leading 21-20 with 8:49 left in the opening half, a layup by Barnes and a 3-pointer from
Chelsea Austin established what became a 20-8 run over the next six and a half minutes and led at the break by 10 points. Perhaps more impressive was CSUSB holding its foe to just two field goals over that span.
The final second half was all CSUSB, which shot 48.4 percent from the field on 15-of-31 shooting.
The Coyotes were equally impressive on the defensive end. They held the Urban Knights' starters to a collective 20 of 64 effort from the field.
Austin finished with nine points off the bench with nine rebounds and
Adriana Brodie had eight points with nine rebounds. Junior
Bisera Peshkova had seven points and
Kiara King had three.
The Coyotes also held a substantial edge in rebounds (59-38).
CSUSB returns to the court for CCAA play this Friday when it plays at Sonoma State.
Zoie Sheng and Sha'Nice Story each had 19 for the Urban Knights (4-3).
