Box Score NAMPA, Idaho (Nov. 21, 2014) -- One of the more remarkable streaks in Division II athletics came to an end Friday afternoon against one of Cal State San Bernardino's more familiar foes.
Sonoma State dealt the Coyotes a 3-0 loss in the NCAA West Regional semifinals, and as a result ended CSUSB's streak of consecutive regional finals at 14 straight years.
Junior OH Alexandra Torline led the Coyotes (21-7) with 18 kills in their 27-25, 25-22, 25-17 loss to the Seawolves.
SSU fired .365 with 52 kills in the three-set match.
"We defend pretty well, we defend at the net well, we defend from the floor well,'' Coyotes coach Kim Cherniss said. "So when a team comes out and hits .365 against us — 18, 15 and 19 kills (in sets 1, 2 and 3) — they're playing some inspired volleyball on their side of the net.''
The Coyotes had difficulty generating runs as proven by their 52 percentage on sideouts. That played a big difference in the end result, according to Cherniss.
"It's really tough,'' she said. "The matches where we've been able to beat them in the past we've been able to do that, we've been able to get them a little more out of system in serve-receive, which they were doing exactly the reverse to us tonight.''
All-American Brenna McIntosh had seven kills with three block assists. Kaitlyn Christner had five kills wtih six block assists, and All-American Tori May had five kills with one solo and four block assists.
Caylie Seitz had 17 kills and Kelsey Hull 11 for the Seawolves (22-6), who face the winnner of the Dixie State/BYU-Hawaii on Saturday night.
