Box Score SAN BERNARDINO (Nov. 13, 2014) -- Senior MB
Tori May has accomplished quite a bit in her two seasons with the Coyotes.
On Thursday night, the Redlands native scorched a season-high 19 kills with one solo block and six block assists to lift the No. 22-ranked Coyotes past visiting Cal State L.A. 3-1 in CCAA play at Coussoulis Arena.
Each week the NCAA posts top statistics for active players in each division. Entering the match against CSULA, May ranked second among all players in D2 with a career .392 hitting percentage. On this night, she ripped a .457 average and her team needed every one of those 19 kills in a match that more than likely secured a position in next week's NCAA Tournament.
The hard-fought 23-25, 25-15, 25-22, 29-27 conquest puts CSUSB at 19-6 overall, 16-5 in the CCAA and ranked seventh in this week's NCAA West Region poll. It will finish the regular season Saturday night against 3-22 Cal State Dominguez Hills.
A 4-0 run midway through the first set put the Golden Eagles, ranked 10th in the West poll, in position for the first set victory, but CSUSB came roaring back to claim the second.
Both May and OH
Alexandra Torline had four kills in the second as the Coyotes fired a match-best .296 average with a 13-for-15 sideout percentage of .860. They also took advantage of 11 attack errors by the Golden Eagles in that set.
Tied at 15-15, a kill from
Kaitlyn Christner put CSUSB in position for three straight points with junior MB
Brenna McIntosh serving. May added two kills and McIntosh had a service ace for the 3-0 run and the Coyotes remained out front.
And though the fourth set had seven ties, the Coyotes never trailed despite nearly having a fifth set occur.
The Coyotes led 23-18 before the Golden Eagles came roaring back and tied the set at 24-24.
The set was tied three more times until the Coyotes got the ball back and the lead at 28-27 off a CSULA service error.
And with Torline serving, the Huntington Beach native ripped an ace for the set and match victory.
Torline and McIntosh joined May in double figures with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Torline added three service aces and junior
Ciara Richards had two aces, with nine digs, three block assists and 43 assists.
Senior L
Arielle McCullough has 26 of the Coyotes' 75 digs and
Ashley Solis added 11 with six kills and five block assists.
McIntosh had four block assists and became the only Coyote in school history to have at least 100 block assists in each of her first four years.
CSULA (16-8, 14-7) was led by Iona Lofrano's 21 kills.
The Coyotes will honor their five seniors -- May, McCullough,
Jordan Ortega,
Alyssa Heldreth and
Brittney Paino -- in a prematch ceremony Saturday.
