Box Score After nine straight victories to open the season, Cal State San Bernardino's women's soccer team felt the sting of defeat for the second time in three days Sunday as Cal State Los Angeles scored two first half goals and made them stand up for a 2-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory before a crowd of about 300 at Coyote Premier Field.
Coming off a 1-0 defeat at UC San Diego on Friday, the Coyotes ran into an aggressive Golden Eagles side that attacked the Coyotes defense with 13 shots in the first half, two of which found the net while CSUSB struggled, getting only one shot on goal and that one was scooped up by CSULA keeper Yi Du.
The victory improved Cal State L.A. to 9-1-1 overall and 4-0 in the CCAA while the Coyotes are now 9-2, 2-2 in the CCAA.
Heather Williams enabled the Golden Eagles to break through in the 23rd minute as she one-timed a crossing pass from Norie Pablo past Coyotes keeper
Emily Whyte. In the 30th minute, Joanna Espinoza, who had just entered the match, redirected a cross from Williams in the box to make it 2-0.
CSUSB's best scoring opportunity came early at the 7:19 mark of the first half when
Kiersten Miller's hard shot from the top of the box was stopped by Du.
The Coyotes were more aggressive in the second half, with six shots, two of them worthy of saves by Du, but couldn't find the net.
Cal State L.A. had 19 shots in the match, 10 on goal, but Whyte saved eight of them.
The Coyotes go on the road to play Sonoma State on Friday and at Humboldt State on Sunday, Oct. 12.
