Box Score SAN BERNARDINO (Oct. 25, 2014) -- No. 15 Cal State San Bernardino bounced back in style Saturday night in its 3-1 victory over visiting San Francisco State in CCAA volleyball at Coussoulis Arena.
Junior OH
Alexandra Torline led the way with a match-high 23 kills and junior MB All-American
Brenna McIntosh had 10 kills with one solo and six block assists in the 25-22, 21-25, 25-15, 25-16 victory.
This was a victory the Coyotes (14-5 overall, 11-4 CCAA) needed after losing a disappointing 3-0 loss to conference leader Sonoma State on Thursday night. The effort on this occasion was more inspired, especially in the third and fourth sets.
CSUSB had just a 55-percent on sideouts in the first two sets, then got cranking in the final two. The Coyotes were 14-of-16 on sideouts in the third set, and 13-of-16 in the fourth set.
It was not surprising that the Coyotes never trailed in those decisive sets.
Torline had seven kills in the opening set and McIntosh had a personal 3-0 run of her own to lead CSUSB, which totaled 17 kills in the first set.
Then in the second, SFSU (9-11, 7-8) hit .343 with Bria Morgan leading the way with five kills in seven attacks and the match was tied at 1-1 heading into the break.
But that was as close as the Gators could get to the Coyotes, who played much stronger as a team. All nine players who saw action for the Coyotes earned a dig in the third set, and led by Torline's five kills and
Ashley Solis with four as CSUSB rolled to a 20-10 lead before closing out the set.
And in the fourth set, the only tie was at 1-1 when CSUSB got rolling.
Both Torline and
Kaitlyn Christner each had four kills and Torline and McIntosh each had two block assists. Christner was strong at her outside hitter position with 10 kills, one solo block and two block assists.
Setter
Ciara Richards had 49 assists on the night with 10 digs and one block assist. And on the dig line, four players had at least 10, led by
Arielle McCullough and
Jordan Ortega with 15 each. Solis had 11.
CSUSB returns to the road this week, playing at Cal State Stanislaus (Friday) and Chico State (Saturday).
Kaileen Mejia led SFSU with 11 kills.
