Box Score SAN BERNARDINO (Oct. 26, 2014) -- One streak came to an end and another remained intact in the Coyotes' 1-1 draw against visiting San Francisco State on Sunday afternoon at Coyote Premier Field.
CSUSB (9-4-1, 5-4-1 CCAA) had its five-game winning streak end, but increased its unbeaten streak to six against a formidable opponent in the Gators (7-8-2, 2-7-1).
More importantly, the Coyotes secured a CCAA Tourney berth with the tie. The Coyotes are tied for fourth with UC San Diego with 16 points. Humboldt State currently has 13 and is seventh. Even with a potential HSU victory on Thursday, the Coyotes own the head-to-head advantage with their 2-0 win over the Lumberjacks earlier this month.
CSUSB will play Sunday at a to-be-determined site in the first round of the conference tourney.
Stephen Watson put the Coyotes on the scoreboard in the 32nd minute on a shot from inside the 18 in the center position. Teammate Juan Gonzalez sent the ball in and the London, England, native fired the shot to the right side for the lead.
The score remained 1-0 at halftime, but SFSU came back to tie it in the 66th minute.
Sam Merritt scored his fifth goal of the season on a loose ball that he delivered to the right of Coyotes' GK
Roberto Gonzalez.
Both teams had one shot in the first OT, but this day would see double OT.
And despite two SOG by the Coyotes in double OT -- one by
Debray Hollimon and the other by
Eric Lavery -- the Coyotes could not penetrate Gators GK Colt Reichl.
CSUSB played with a man advantage for roughly 40 minutes after Gators' Gerry Cruz was dealt a red card in the second half.
Both teams combined for 17 fouls.
CSUSB completes the regular season Thursday afternoon at Chico State.
