Box Score SAN BERNARDINO (Oct. 16, 2014) -- It has been said that a mark of a good team is finding a way to win when you're not playing at your best.
No. 14 CSUSB rallied in each of its three sets against visiting Cal State Monterey Bay and earned a 3-0 win over the Otters at Coussoulis Arena on Thursday night.
This week's CCAA Player of the Week
Alexandra Torline led the Coyotes with 15 kills in their 28-26, 25-23, 25-19 victory.
The Coyotes (12-4 overall, 9-3 CCAA) hit just .107 on the night and were just 50 percent on sideouts. But their ability to come-from-behind was impressive.
CSUSB trailed 25-24 and 26-25 in the first set, but fought back. The Coyotes tied the set at 25-25 on a bad set by CSUMB, then earned a kill from Torline to tie at 26-26.
The Coyotes then took advantage of an attack error and earned the win on a kill from junior All-American MB
Brenna McIntosh.
CSUMB trailed early in the second set and trailed as late as 20-15 after a kill from Julia Ashen.
But with sophomore
Abbey Vollkommer serving, CSUSB got back into the set -- thanks to two attack errors from CSUMB and a kill from junior OH
Ashley Solis to put the score at 21-20 CSUMB.
The Otters built their lead to three at 23-20, but a kill from senior All-American MB
Tori May provided a sideout and the Coyotes would not be deterred.
An attack error and a bad set tied the set at 23-23. A block from Torline and May gave the Coyotes a one-point lead and the Coyotes grabbed the set on another block -- this time from May and setter
Ciara Richards.
CSUSB's third slow start almost seemed insurmountable. The Otters (4-12, 4-8 CCAA) went ahead 15-8 before a May kill turned the tide.
That set in motion a, 11-1 run -- thanks to four Torline kills -- and the Coyotes led 19-16 after another Otter attack error.
Down the stretch, Torline added a kill and a service ace and the match victory belonged to the Coyotes when the Otters had their 28th attack error of the night.
May had 10 kills to join Torline in double digits and May (four) and Richards (three) totaled seven block assists between the two.
Senior L
Arielle McCullough had 11 digs and Richards had 10.
McIntosh had eight kills with one solo block. No other Coyote had more than five kills.
CSUSB returns to Coussoulis Arena on Saturday night against Cal State East Bay.
CSUMB was led by Julia Ashen's 12 kills.
