Coyotes get going against Sonoma State

Alfonso Cano scored two first-half goals in the 4-3 win over Sonoma State.
Box Score ROHNERT PARK (Oct. 10, 2014) -- For only the second time in school history, Cal State San Bernardino defeated Sonoma State, winning 4-3 on Friday in CCAA men's soccer.

The victory snapped CSUSB's four-game losing streak as it will take a 5-4 overall record and 1-4 CCAA slate into Sunday's contest at Humboldt State.

Coach Steve Ralos's team wasted little team earning momentum against the Seawolves. Diego Mendoza put the Coyotes on the scoreboard in the ninth minute, scoring off a corner with assists handed to Juan Carlos Gonzalez and Daniel Looker.

Four minutes later, Alfonso Cano scored the first of two straight goals, connecting unassisted in the 14th minute. In the 20th minute, Mendoza took the kick off a foul and Cano earned a header and the Coyotes had a 3-0 lead.

SSU added a first-half goal and the teams went into the break.

CSUSB held a 4-1 advantage when Gonzalez scored on a feed from Cano from 15 feet out in the 57th minute.

SSU (6-5-1) added two second-half goals, but this was a day that belonged to the Coyotes.

The victory was just the second in series history for the Coyotes, who entered the day 1-17-2 in a series against the Seawolves that began in 1993. They also are 5-0 on the season when they score multiple goals.
