Coyotes experience high and low in tourney play

Coach earns 500th victory, but Coyotes later lose in four to No. 24 Central Washington

Hanna Liserra (left) and Brenna McIntosh work on a potential block against Fort Lewis State.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO – The Coyotes made sure coach Kim Cherniss did not have to wait too long for a career milestone in the 2013 season opener.

Behind All-CCAA sophomore OH Alexandra Torline's 13 kills, the 14th-ranked Coyotes took apart visiting Fort Lewis State 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-21) in Friday's Coyote Classic.

The Coyotes were efficient with a .317 attack percentage (45 kills, 13 errors, 101 attacks) and led throughout most of the match.
CSUSB never trailed in the opener and broke away from the Skyhawks in the second set after the sixth tie of the set at 9-9.

A kill from sophomore Ashley Solis gave the Coyotes the lead for good, and with senior S Stephanie Sinohui setting, the Coyotes scored a quick two-point rally (a kill from Torline and an ace from Sinohui and CSUSB was never threatened again.

In the third set, senior MB Destiny McIntyre threw down consecutive kills that gave the Coyotes a 15-12 lead.

McIntosh and Solis each had nine kills and senior Danielle Newcombe and junior Tori May had five apiece.

Freshman Hannah Liserra led the Coyotes with 26 assists in her first start and Sinohui had 12.

Junior All-CCAA libero Arielle McCullough had 11 digs and McIntosh led in blocks with two assists.

No. 24 Central Washington 3, Coyotes 1
And in the Coyotes' nightcap, No. 24 Central Washington earned its first-ever win over CSUSB in eight meetings, earning a 3-1 victory (25-23, 17-25, 32-30, 25-19).

This was a frustrating loss to say the least as the Coyotes held leads late in the first and third set, but couldn't maintain momentum and the Wildcats took advanatage.

A Danielle Newcombe kill put CSUSB up 19-16 in the first set, but CWU outpointed the Coyotes 7-4 to tie at 23-23 and earned the win with an attack error from Torline and a block from CWU's Erin Smith.

It happened again in the third set, too, as CSUSB built a 20-16 lead after a kill from McIntosh.

CWU climbed back on a 7-2 run and after six ties, CWU broke away on a service error and a block assist to earn the 32-30 win.

And in the fourth and final set, the Coyotes could not answer CWU's run. After tying the set at 14-14 on a Solis kill, CWU pulled ahead for good on two kills from Linden Firethorne and never let go of the lead.

CSUSB had 31 attack errors on the match.

Newcombe led the Coyotes with 15 kills and Tori May and Solis each had 12.

McIntosh led all scorers with four service aces.

The Coyotes look to bounce back with a 2:30 p.m. match against Seattle Pacific. They finish the tourney at 7:30 p.m. against Regis.
