SAN FRANCISCO – The end result did not look promising.
Trailing 13-11 in the fifth set, the No. 22 Coyotes found the will they needed to come through with four consecutive points for the set and match victory over host San Francisco State in CCAA volleyball Saturday night.
Junior MB
Tori May led the Coyotes with 16 kills and four block assists and sophomore OH
Alexandra Torline added 15
kills in CSUSB's 20-25, 25-17, 25-19, 19-25, 15-13 victory over the Gators.
After a SFSU service ace put the Gators up 13-11 in the fifth, Coyotes head coach
Kim Cherniss took a timeout. After the break, Cherniss proved to a master motivator as CSUSB got a kill from
Danielle Newcombe to pull CSUSB to within a point.
A service ace from sophomore MB
Brenna McIntosh tied the set and Newcombe followed with another kill.
After SFSU called a timeout, sophomore
Ashley Solis threw down a kill on an assist from senior
Stephanie Sinohui for the match winner.
This was a big weekend for the Coyotes, who brought 4-4 overall record into the Bay Area trip. They completed a sweep that featured a 3-0 win over No. 18 Sonoma State on Saturday and a come-from-behind win against the Gators that should put the team in good spirits entering Wednesday's home match against nationally-ranked UC San Diego.
Trailing 1-0 in the match, the Coyotes answered with successive victories in the next two sets. They had a .350 attack percentage in the second set (on 16 kills) and backed it up with another stellar effort on the attack in the third, hitting .343 with 13 kills and only one attack error.
In the fourth and the set tied at 17-17, SFSU earned a piece of momentum after a Coyote service error. It forged ahead and pulled away from the Coyotes for the 25-19 winner.
In the fifth, it appeared that the Gators would pull away with the winner after the set was tied at 11-11.
A kill and a service ace gave SFSU the 13-11 lead, but the Coyotes would be denied.
Solis was the only other Coyote with double-digits in kills with 11. Sinohui had 42 assists in her second consecutive start.
Newcombe led the Coyotes with 14 digs, with
Jordan Ortega adding 12 and
Arielle McCullough 11.
McIntosh was again big on the block with two solos and four block assists. May also had four block assists and Torline and Solis each had three block assists.
SFSU fell to 5-5, 0-2.
