Coyotes end tourney play with another split

CSUSB tops Cal Baptist in five, after losing to Point Loma Nazarene in 5

Sophomore OH Alexandra Torline led the Coyotes in kills in both of Saturday's matches.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA JOLLA -- THe 18th-ranked Coyotes completed their nonconference portion of the 2013 season with a loss and a victory at the UC San Diego Tournament.

The Coyotes were dealt a 3-2 loss at the hands of Point Loma Nazarene, before ending the day with a 3-2 win over Cal Baptist.

CSUSB takes a 4-4 overall record into Friday's CCAA opener at Sonoma State.

Point Loma Nazarene 3, Coyotes 2

CSUSB fought back from a 2-0 deficit to force a deciding Game 5 set, but could not get over the hump for the victory.

Sophomore OH Alexandra Torline led the Coyotes with 18 kills and sophomore MB Brenna McIntosh had 15 kills with five block assists and one solo in the defeat.

Down 2-0, Torline's kill tied the game at 21-21. She followed with another kill and after two attack errors by PLNU, led 24-21.

After a PLNU kill, Torline finished off the set with another kill, her sixth in the set.

McIntosh showed her mettle in the fourth set and helped the Coyotes tie the match.

With the set tied at 23-23, McIntosh threw down a kill for the lead and then teamed with Sarah Tubert on the following play with a block assist to force the fifth set.

Six ties occurred in the final set, but PLNU got a block to make the score 12-11. It added two more points and after a service error made the score 14-12, they won with a kill from Alyssa Dwyer.

Junior MB Tori May had 13 kills for the Coyotes, who had 64 for the match.

CSUSB was hindered on the serve-receive as it had six service aces to 12 receiving errors and six service errors.

Junior L Arielle McCullough had 23 digs and freshman setter Hannah Liserra had 14 digs with 53 assists.

Coyotes 3, Cal Baptist 2

Torline again led the Coyotes on the attack with 19 kills and overcame CBU's victories in sets three and four to win in five.

With Danielle Newcombe serving in the final set, the Coyotes strung a three-point run for a 6-4 lead.

After CBU cut the Coyotes' lead to 8-7, two consecutive attack errors from CBU put the Coyotes up 10-7. They remained ahead and with Stephanie Sinohui at the serve, CSUSB got a block assist from McIntosh and Newcombe and attack error to move ahead 14-10.

And after a CBU point, Torline, predictably, got the victory with her final kill of the day.

Newcombe had 13 kills and May 10 to complete the Coyotes' double-digit efforts. Ashley Solis and May each had four block assists.

TOURNEY NOTES: Torline was the only Coyote named to the all-tourney team, announced upon conclusion of the two-day event. UCSD's Sara McCutchan was named the tourney's most outstanding player.
