Coyotes fall short in 13 innings against No. 5 Chico State

Rios throws gem in his 7 innings

RHP Ruben Rios gave up just one hit over 7 innings with eight strikeouts.
Box Score CHICO -- Junior RHP Ruben Rios threw an absolute gem of a game in Sunday's series finale against No. 5 Chico State.
Rios threw one-hit ball over seven innings, but the Coyotes came up just shy in a 2-1 loss to the Wildcats in 13 innings.

Rios, along with relievers Brian Jipp and Kerry Kelley helped strike out 11 Wildcats batters on the game.

The Coyotes grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Designated hitter Billy Hamilton delivered a two-out single up the middle that scored Curtis Cassise, who reached on a walk.

That 1-0 lead strong until Chico State tied the ballgame in the ninth.

With one out in the ninth and the bases loaded, Jipp forced in Cody Webber on a balk.

Reliever Kerry Kelley came on and induced an inning-ending double play to force extra innings.

Chico State then earned the win in the 13th. Ryne Clark came through with a double to right field and Roger Boulden scored all the way from first.

Cassise led the Coyotes at the plate, going 3-for-4. Aaron Beckley had two base hits as the Coyotes out-hit the Wildcats 11-3.

CSUSB (11-21, 5-19) returns to Fiscalini Field on Friday when it begins a four-game series against Cal State Monterey Bay.
