SAN BERNARDINO – The Coyotes provided a team effort in earning their 6-4 win over Cal State East Bay in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Coyote Park.
The Coyotes, who were defeated 8-5 in the second game, are now 11-25 overall and 7-17 in the CCAA heading into this week's Tournament of Champions in Turlock and hosted by Cal State Stanislaus. The Pioneers (11-21, 7-17) also will be participating in the Turlock tourney.
Game 1: Coyotes 6, Cal State East Bay 4
Britney Butler added to her career school record home runs with her 43
rd in the first inning, but the Coyotes took command with a pivotal four-run fifth inning.
Up 1-0 through three innings, CSUSB padded its lead to 2-0 on
Alyssa Flores' single to center that scored Butler, who doubled to left.
CSUEB came back to two runs in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2, but the Coyotes got the job done in the bottom half of the inning.
Darian Munoz' RBI-triple down the right-field line scored
Alyssa Ramos.
Charlotte Galzote followed with an RBI-single through the left side and CSUSB led 4-2.
Galzote later scored on a wild pitch and Butler scored the team's fourth run of the inning on
Monica Ferguson's ground out.
Butler had three hits and Flores had two as the Coyotes and Pioneers each had eight hits.
Taylor Davis earned the win. She threw 2 1/3 innings of relief and gave up four hits.
Kaitlyn Randall had two strikeouts and two walks in 4 2/3 innings.
Sara Pacioni had a home run for the Pioneers.
Game 2: Cal State East Bay 8, Coyotes 5
Down 3-0, the Pioneers scored eight unanswered including a six-run fifth to secure the split on the day and on the weekend.
Galzote,
Alyssa Ramos and
Jacqueline Lopez each had two hits for the Coyotes, who had the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh.
Down 8-4, the Coyotes strung together four straight hits – Flores, Ferguson,
Jamie Leffingwell and Ramos to load the bases.
Amanda Lopez delivered a shot to left, but the Pioneers' Nicole Adair camped under it to secure the out and the win.
Meli Sanchez had three hits and three RBI for the Pioneers, who earned the win from Kelsey Cairns. She went the distance and struck out two, but scattered 12 Coyotes' hits.
