David Silvas was the man with the plan Thursday afternoon with a solo home run and a double in the Coyotes' 4-2 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in CCAA baseball at Fiscalini Field.
The Coyotes (9-4 overall and 3-2 CCAA) and the Toros (6-8, 3-6) return to Fiscalini on Friday for game two of the four-game series.
The Coyotes scored solo runs in each of the first three innings and added another in the seventh.
Aaron Beckley gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead in the first when he reached on a lead-off single, moved to second on a sacrifice, then advanced on consecutive wild pitches.
Silvas made his presence known in the second when he connected on a one-out, opposite field shot to right.
Then, in the third,
Remington Miller reached on a fielder's choice and one out later, scored on a fielder's choice by
Jake Pilkerton.
CSUDH answered with two runs in the fourth, but Coyotes starter
Kerry Kelley (2-1) was more than effective in his seven innings. He gave up four hits, three runs – all earned – and had two strikeouts with three walks.
Phil Gonzalez came on in relief in the eighth and sophomore RHP
Matt LeVert earned the save in the ninth.
The Toros threatened in the ninth with the bases loaded and one out. But LeVert got out of the jam with a strikeout and ended the game with a flyout to mid-center.
Billy Hamilton also had two hits for the Coyotes – a single and a double.
The Toros had five hits, but no one had more than one.
