Coyotes lose CCAA opener

CSUSB dealt 11-6 loss to Cal Poly Pomona

SAN BERNARDINO – The Coyotes had difficulty against freshman LHP Max Bethell and were dealt an 11-6 loss to the Cal Poly Pomona in the CCAA opener for both teams Thursday afternoon.

The loss was CSUSB's first of the season in six games, while CPP remained unbeaten at 8-0. The teams return to Fiscalini Field on Friday. First pitch is 2 p.m.

Down 3-0 entering their half of the third inning, the Coyotes scored five runs on four runs on seven hits.

Aaron Beckley hit a Baltimore chop to shortstop and beat out the throw to score David Silvas, who doubled to left. Curtis Cassise then followed with a single to left to load the bases for Remington Miller, who singled to third and earned the RBI.

Trevor McMaster drove in the third run of the inning on a single to third and Richard Mount earned an RBI on a fielder's choice to put the Coyotes up 4-3.

But CPP answered right back with a five-run, three-hit fifth and remained in front the remainder of the game.

Mount took care of the Coyotes' final runs with a two-run shot over the right-field wall that cut CPP's lead to 10-6 in the sixth.

Bethell struck the first five batters he faced and finished with six in seven innings. All six runs he allowed were earned.

Mount led the Coyotes with three RBI, while Miller, McMaster, Michael Castello and Silvas all had two hits.

Jason Padlo was 3-for-5 for CPP.

Junior RHP James Trebus took the loss for the Coyotes. He threw three innings, with four strikeouts allowed eight runs, but none were earned.
