Coyotes sweep up Azusa Pacific, 15-5, 8-1

CSUSB trails in just one inning on the day

AZUSA -- A day off did not stop the Coyotes from their recent hitting prowess as the they swept past host Azusa Pacific 15-5 and 8-1 in nonconference baseball Saturday afternoon.

CSUSB will take a 5-0 record into its CCAA season opener Thursday against visting Cal Poly Pomona. First pitch is 2 p.m.

Game 1: Coyotes 15, Azusa Pacific 5

Remington Miller enjoyed a 4-for-5 day and five other Coyotes had a multi-hit game led by David Silvas' home run in the ninth.

CSUSB scored three runs in the first on just one hit. Miller's RBI single put the 'Yotes on the board and they added two unearned runs .

They added one more run in the second, before padding the lead in the third with three runs and the fourth with five runs.

In the fourth, Beckley's two-run double keyed the inning as CSUSB had five hits.

All told, CSUSB had 16 hits off six Cougar pitchers.

Beckley, Richard Mount, Trevor McMaster and Christian Gomez all had two hits. Beckley had three RBI, while Miller and Silvas had two.

Ruben Rios earned the win and improved to 2-0. He threw five innings without a strikeout and scattered six hits, two runs -- both earned.

Game 2: Coyotes 8, Azusa Pacific 1

After trailing 1-0 through one inning, CSUSB struck back with a two-run second and a five-run third to coast past the Cougars.

Jake Pilkerton had two doubles with two RBI, and Beckley and Billy Hamilton each had two hits.

Leading 2-1 through two, the Coyotes four hits in the pivotal third. They sent nine batters to the plate with Pilkerton's RBI double the only extra-base hit of the frame.

Ken Kissell earned the win and struck out seven in six innings. He gave up four hits.
