Box Score Box Score: Coyotes 9, Bethesda Christian 1
SAN BERNARDINO -- The 2013 season opener belonged to the host Coyotes on Friday with quality pitching and offensive production to back it up.
James Trebus and
Ken Kissell combined on a one-hitter and
Remington Miller had two doubles with three RBI as the Coyotes took care of business with a 9-1 win over Bethesda Christian in nonconference play.
Trebus threw five innings of no-hit ball with five strikeouts and one walk, and Kissell gave up one hit in four innings of relief with four strikeouts.
The Flames grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning without the benefit of a hit. Jeff Villalobos reached base on a hit by pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice and eventually scored on a ground-out.
That would be the end of any hope for the Flames, as they did not advance a base runner past second after the third inning.
Meanwhile, the Coyotes answered with three multi-run innings to win going away.
CSUSB grabbbed the lead for good in the fourth. Miller hit a one-out double to center that scored
Curtis Cassise, who reached on a fielder's choice. Miller later scored on a
Trevor McMaster sacrifice fly to center.
The Coyotes padded their lead to 6-1, thanks to a four-run, five-hit fifth inning. Beckley and Cassise each had RBI singles, and Miller added his second straight double to center that scored both Beckley and Cassise.
Cassise added his second RBI of the day with a fielder's choice in the sixth, and the Coyotes added two more runs in the eighth -- thanks to
Andrew Harrison's pinch-hit, two-run single.
Beckley, Miller and
Jake Pilkerton each had two hits. Pilkerton was adept on the basepaths with three stolen bases.
The teams conclude their series with a 9-inning game Saturday. First pitch is 1 p.m.
