SAN BERNARDINO – CCAA champion Cal State San Bernardino completed its regular season by winning for the ninth straight time and 22
nd time in its last 23 matches with a 3-1 victory (25-20, 22-25, 25-17, 25-15) over Cal State L.A. at Coussoulis Arena on Saturday night.
CSUSB, which earlier in the week won its eighth straight CCAA crown, takes a 25-5 overall record into the NCAA West Regional on Dec. 5-7 at to-be-determined location. The Coyotes were ranked third in last week's regional poll, behind No. 1 UC San Diego and No. 2 BYU-Hawaii.
The Coyotes figure to move up from their third spot as UCSD lost Wednesday night to the Coyotes and were upset Friday night against Cal State L.A. BYUH completed its regular season Friday night with a victory over Hawaii Pacific.
Outside hitters
Ashley Solis (12),
Alexandra Torline (11) and
Danielle Newcombe (10) had 33 of the Coyotes 57 kills, while middle blockers
Tori May (eight kills, four block assists) and
Brenna McIntosh (10 kills) factored greatly in one of the Coyotes' most efficient matches of 2013.
After each team earned a set, CSUSB grabbed control in the third with an early 5-0 run, with kills from
Jordan Ortega, McIntosh and Solis, and a block assist from May and Newcombe for a 6-2 lead. CSUSB also benefitted from 12 Golden Eagles' attack errors in the set.
CSUSB trailed by four early in the fourth (9-5), but a kill from senior setter
Stephanie Sinohui set in motion a 6-1 spurt and later went ahead for good at 13-12 on a kill from McIntosh.
Sinohui had 43 assists and 10 digs – her seventh double-double on the season and her fourth in as many matches.
Junior libero
Arielle McCullough, who became the single-season digs leader in school history in Friday's win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, had 19.
Solis and Newcombe also had double-doubles on the evening as Solis had 14 digs and Newcombe had 15.

CSULA closed its season 16-14, 11-11. Bethanee Boggs and Kymberly Silveyra led in kills with 11 apiece.
