SAN BERNARDINO – The No. 14 Coyotes overcame a scare Friday night with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in CCAA volleyball.

Sophomore OH Alexandra Torline led the Coyotes with 15 kills in their 21-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-11, 15-12 victory over the Toros.

Fellow sophomore OH Ashley Solis added 12 kills and junior MB Tori May 11 helped the Coyotes to their third straight 5-set victory after trailing 2-0. CSUSB clinched the CCAA regular season Wednesday night in its comeback win over UC San Diego.

The Toros were chasing their first victory over the Coyotes since 1991 and were in complete command through two sets.

The totaled 38 kills in those sets and were sailing with clear momentum – thanks to the play of Alijah Gunsaulus and Tarryn Luafalemana.

The Coyotes (24-5 overall, 20-1 CCAA) slowly picked apart the Toros. May had five of her 11 kills in the third set as the Coyotes grabbed the lead from the beginning and held the Toros to just .081 on the attack.

CSUSB then tied the match at 2-2, but this time senior Danielle Newcombe led the way on the attack with five kills and four service aces from reserve Alexis Romberg.

Then in the fifth, after the set was tied four times with the latest at 11-11, the Coyotes bore down.

A kill from Torline gave the Coyotes a 12-11 lead and after a pair of attack errors from CSUDH, CSUSB led 14-11 – the final point on a block assist from Torline and Brenna McIntosh.

A Coyote attack error gave the Toros sideout at 14-12, but the Coyotes closed the match with a CSUDH service error.
Luafalemana led CSUDH (11-18, 4-17) with 18 kills and Gunsaulus had 16.

CSUSB closes out the regular season Saturday night at home against Cal State L.A. The Coyotes will honor their four seniors – Destiny McIntyre, Danielle Maxwell, Danielle Newcombe and Stephanie Sinohui in a prematch ceremony.
