No. 12 Coyotes run into Sonoma State buzz saw

CSUSB had 13-match winning streak snapped

Senior Danielle Newcombe had seven of her nine kills in the fourth set.
Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – The Coyotes made the turn as the second half of CCAA play began this weekend.

And what No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino faced in No. 14 Sonoma State on Saturday was a team that got on a roll and did not let go.

Up 1-0 on the strength of a .346 attack percentage, the Coyotes were outperformed by a Seawolves team that got hot and did not let up, earning a 3-1 victory (18-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-19) over the Coyotes for the first time in 34 meetings.

Not since the 1995 season had CSUSB lost to Sonoma State.

Caylie Seitz led SSU with 18 kills and a .452 attack percentage as it hit .315 on the night.

The Coyotes, who had their 13 match winning streak snapped, were led by junior MB Tori May's 13 kills and .545 attack percentage.

In fact, after the opening set the Coyotes never led again at any point in match. There were five ties in the second set, but thereafter it was Sonoma State.

Three Coyotes had nine kills – senior Danielle Newcombe, sophomore Brenna McIntosh and sophomore Ashley Solis. McIntosh had two solo blocks and two block assists.

SSU had attack percentages of .342 in the second set, .325 in the third and hit .471 (16 kills without an error) in the final set.

Madelyn Densberger had 13 kills and Kelsey Hull had 12 for SSU (17-4, 10-3 CCAA).

The Coyotes (16-5, 12-1) look to bounce back with home matches this weekend against Cal State Stanislaus (Friday) and Chico State (Saturday).
