Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – No. 12-ranked Cal State San Bernardino saved its best performance when it needed it most in a 3-1 victory over visiting San Francisco State in CCAA volleyball Friday night at Coussoulis Arena.
The victory, CSUSB's 13
th straight, improved the Coyotes to 16-4 overall and 12-0 in the conference. The current winning streak is the fifth-best in school history.
Up 2-1 in the match, the Coyotes broke out of their attack funk by hitting .333 (15 kills, 4 errors in 33 attacks) with three different players –
Tori May,
Brenna McIntosh and
Ashley Solis -- having four kills in the set.
In the deciding set, the Coyotes trailed 15-12 before finding another gear.
A May kill cut the deficit to two and the Coyotes scored six straight points to clearly place momentum on their side.
Solis had three of her kills in the run and May added a kill and a block assist (with freshman setter
Hannah Liserra) and CSUSB led 19-15.
A service ace from SFSU's Jacquie Brice closed the gap to 20-19 CSUSB, but the Coyotes got going with May's kill extending their lead to 21-19.
A block and a kill from
Alexandra Torline put the score at 23-19 and the Coyotes went on to earn the set and match victory with a final kill from Torline.
Solis led the Coyotes with 16 kills and McIntosh was right behind with 15. Torline added 11 kills and May had 10.
McIntosh contributed four block assists and the 5-8 Liserra and 6-3 May each had three block assists.
CSUSB made good use of their serve receive as it had eight service aces – three from
Danielle Newcombe and two from Torline.
Defensively, coach
Kim Cherniss received stellar efforts as four Coyotes had double digits on digs. Led by junior libero
Arielle McCullough's 27, Solis had 17, senior setter
Stephanie Sinohui 11 and Newcombe with 10.
SFSU fell to 9-11, 4-8. The Gators were led by Meagan Wright's match-high 16 kills.
CSUSB returns to Coussoulis Arena on Saturday night when it plays host to No. 14 Sonoma State.
