Ashley Solis each had nine kills, but they were not enough as No. 9 Angelo State turned back the No. 11 Coyotes 3-0 in opening-round play at the Colorado Premier Tournament in a match played at Regis College.
The Coyotes were dealt a 25-17, 25-11, 25-20 defeat and concluded Friday's matches with a 3-0 loss to host Regis.
CSUSB did not own a lead in the first two games, but fought hard in the third against Angelo State. The Coyotes led early and tied the Rams four times until ASU got going. After a kill from
Mercedes Winchester brought the Coyotes to within a point at 11-10, the Rams rallied with four straight points and never trailed again.
CSUSB sophomore setter
Stephanie Sinohui had 29 assists, while Solis had two service aces. Newcombed and sophomore
Arielle McCullough led with nine digs apiece, and freshman
Brenna McIntosh had five block assists.
Against Regis, Winchester and Solis each had nine kills in the 25-20, 25-17, 25-22 loss.
The first game was tight throughout. It featured six ties and as late as 13-13. But Regis made use of a six-point run and went on for the win.
The Coyotes fired a .312 attack percentage in the second game, but Regis owned a .387 and utilized a 9-0 run to lead 22-11.
In game three, CSUSB grabbed a 22-21 lead on a kill from Winchester. But Regis took advantage of three straight attack errors to end the match for the win.
The Coyotes complete play Saturday with two matches. It's not known at 7:33 p.m. Friday what teams they'll face.
