McIntosh sets block record in 3-1 win over No. 18 Chico State

Brenna McIntosh broke the block assists record with 12 against No. 18 Chico State.

SAN BERNARDINO
– As the month of September comes to a close, the Coyotes have shown steady progress in the 2012 volleyball season.

CSUSB earned its fifth consecutive victory, but this time it came against a nationally-ranked team in No. 18 Chico State. On Saturday night, it was all Coyotes in their 3-1 (25-11, 23-25, 25-15, 25-19) victory over the Wildcats before a crowd of 410 at Coussoulis Arena.

Freshman Brenna McIntosh established a Coyote record with 12 block assists as CSUSB had 22 team blocks in the decisive win over the Wildcats for the 34th straight time in the series.

McIntosh broke the record shared by Amy Long in 2005 and two-time National Player of the Year Samantha Middleborn last season. She also had 13 digs.

Junior Danielle Newcombe led the Coyotes (8-6 overall, 5-1 CCAA) in kills with 12 on a .355 attack percentage and three solo blocks. Freshmen Ashley Solis and Alexandra Torline each had 11 kills and senior Mercedes Winchester had 10 kills with five block assists.

Torline also was impressive on the block with one solo and eight assists, while Solis had five block assists.
CSUSB ran away with the first set, holding the Wildcats to a -.029 attack percentage. Solis led with five kills and Torline three.

Down 21-16 in the second set, CSUSB climbed back after an attack error from Chico. Senior All-American Camille Smith set and she showed her leadership skills as the Coyotes ran off four straight points and led 22-21.

The teams tied twice down the stretch, but Chico State got a kill sfrom Katie Morley and an attack error by Torline gave the Wildcats the win.

In the third, McIntosh and Torline teamed up for five block assists each, while Newcombe threw five kills and four from Torline.

Torline and McIntosh gave the Coyotes a lift in the fourth set as they combined on block assists on three straight points. CSUSB led 5-3 after the final combo and never relinquished the lead.

And in the final set, CSUSB led from the outset as Winchester had four kills and the freshmen trio of Torline, McIntosh and Solis each had three kills.

Smith led the Coyotes with 44 assists, eight digs and three block assists. Sophomore Arielle McCullough had 23 digs.

CSUSB is on the road next week and gets started Friday night at San Francisco State.
