Gators no match for Coyotes' defensive effort

CSUSB gains 5th shutout on the year in 2-0 win over SFSU

Junior D Lee Nishanian registered his first assist of the season against SFSU.
Box Score: Coyotes 2, SF State 0

SAN FRANCISCO
-- Freshman Ricardo Velasco and senior Martin Esqueda found their way to paydirt as the Coyotes' men's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory over San Francisco State on Friday in CCAA play at Cox Stadium.

The victory keeps the Coyotes unbeaten on the season at 2-0-5 overall and 2-0-3 in the CCAA South. It was their fifth shutout in seven games and fourth shutout in five CCAA games this month.

Velasco put the Coyotes on the scoreboard in the 39th minute as junior defender Lee Nishanian sent a nifty cross in front of the net to Velasco, who beat Gators GK Mike McNeil.

The score remained 1-0 into the second half, but Velasco's day ended when he and Gator Eilmaz Sarli were ejected due to red card violations.

At the 57-minute mark, Esqueda scored his first goal of the season on a free from 30 yards out.

That's all Coyotes GK All-American Tanner Olinger needed. He had three saves and left the game at 67:59 and freshman reserve Jeff Salt had two saves down the stretch. Neither player receives the victory as a GK must play 70 minutes for a win and the game is recorded as a team shutout.

SFSU (1-5-1, 0-3-1) out-shot the Coyotes 15-9 and had five corners to CSUSB's one.

CSUSB completes the weekend Sunday at Cal Poly Pomona. Kickoff is 11:30 a.m.

NOTES: Olinger improved his save percentage to .967 (29 saves in 30 chances)... The all-time series is now tied at 8-8-2.
