Box Score: Coyotes 2, CSU Dominguez Hills 0
SAN BERNARDINO -- Through four games in the 2012 season, the Coyotes had yet to earn a win or take a loss.
That trend came to a resounding end Friday afternoon as CSUSB earned goals from newcomers
Ricardo Velasco and
Leo Mendoza and veteran goalkeeper
Tanner Olinger came through again in a 2-0 shutout over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills in CCAA men's soccer.
CSUSB, now 1-0-4 overall and 1-0-2 CCAA, return to Coyote Premier Field on Sunday morning when they face UC San Diego. Kickoff is 11:30 a.m.
The Coyotes ended their scoreless streak at 437 minutes when Velasco hammered in a free kick at the 33-minute mark. Not since
Demetri Burgos delivered a goal in the 36th minute in the season opener against Colorado Mesa had CSUSB earned a tally.
CSUSB remained out front 1-0 through halftime, but padded the lead and let its stellar defense take over. Freshman
Leo Mendoza, on a pass from Velasco, hammered a shot from 35 yards out that Toros GK Juan Quiroz never had a chance to stop just three minutes into the second half.
Olinger had five saves for his third shutout of the season and his 13th in his career.
CSUSB dominated with a physical brand of soccer that its opponent traditionally shows on the pitch. It had 19 fouls and did not allow any kind of offensive threat from CSUDH (1-3-1, 1-2)
Velasco had three SOG and Mendoza had two.
