PHOENIX -- The No. 3-ranked Coyotes bounced back from Friday's loss against nationally-ranked Metro State with a 3-1 victory over Western New Mexico in tourney play at the Grand Canyon Labor Day tourney.
CSUSB completed the day with a 3-1 loss to host Grand Canyon.
The Coyotes (2-2 overall) remain on the road this week as they will play at the Colorado Premier Tournament in Denver beginning Friday.
The Coyotes earned the 25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 25-16 with 49 kills on 142 attacks. Freshman
Ashley Solis led the Coyotes with 12 kills and senior
Mercedes Winchester added 10.
After taking the opening set, CSUSB and the WNMU battled in set two and had six ties. The final of the six put the score at 23-23 on a block from Winchester and freshman
Alexandra Torline.
The Coyotes committed a service error and WNMU earned the win on an attack error by
Brittney Paino.
The Coyotes trailed by three (12-9) in the third set and rallied for a 19-15 lead on a kill from
Jay Rutledge. But WNMU had a rally of its own and tied the set at 20-20 and 22-22.
Rutledge gave the Coyotes a lead with a kill and stayed out front and earned the win on a kill from Solis.
In the decisive set, CSUSB had 12 kills on just four attack errors and grabbed control midway through.
Senior All-American setter
Camille Smith had 42 assists wtih five service acess, 17 digs and three block assists. Winchester added six block assists for the win.
Against the Antelopes, Winchester keyed the Coyotes' attack with 13 kills in the 25-23, 16-25, 11-25, 12-25 defeat.
It was a tough match as the Coyotes had 16 service errors and just two aces of their own.
Winchester and Solis each had two solo blocks.
