PHOENIX -- Freshman
Ashley Solis stepped up in her first match as a Coyote on Friday morning, throwing down a match-high 13 kills as No. 3-ranked CSUSB defeated Colorado-Colorado Springs 3-0 in tourney play at the Grand Canyon Labor Day Tournament.
Equally impressive was senior
Mercedes Winchester, who posted a .643 attack percentage with 10 kills, one error in 14 attempts. The Coyotes fired a .296 attack percentage (48-16-108), who were in control during the 25-13, 25-18, 25-19 victory.
Senior All-American
Camille Smith had 35 assists, while freshman
Alexandra Torline had three service aces to lead in those categories for the Coyotes. Sophomore
Arielle McCullough had 16 digs and Smith kicked in 12.
Winchester led with three block assists and Torline had two.
The Coyotes came up short in the day's second match, losing to No. 13 Metro State, 3-1.
Solis had 13 kills against the Roadrunners and Winchester added eight in the 25-17, 17-25, 22-25, 16-25 defeat.
The Coyotes were held to .067 on the attack (40-30-150) and had difficulty overcoming the MSC's trio f Alysa Heath, Amy Wong and Lauren Quijano, who combined for 45 of its 51 kills. Wong also had 19 digs.
McCullough led CSUSB with 20 digs and Winchester had four service aces.
CSUSB completes tourney play Saturday against Western New Mexico and Grand Canyon.
