Coyotes secure 5-4 win at Cal Poly Pomona

Pitching, timely hitting pay off as series moves to Fiscalini

-- Trailing 4-0, the Coyotes scored five unanswered runs and earned a 5-4 win over host Cal Poly Pomona in CCAA baseball Friday afternoon.

The Coyotes (13-10 overall, 10-8 CCAA) and Broncos (18-11, 11-11) move their series to CSUSB's Fiscalini Field on Saturday for a doubleheader. First pitch is 11 a.m.

CPP grabbed the lead in the second inning with four runs on three hits off Coyotes' starter Mike Mudron (3-0). The junior left-hander settled down afterward and finished five innings, with six strikeouts and four hits. All four runs were earned.

The Coyotes cut the deficit to 4-2 with two runs in the fourth inning. After Curtis Cassise drew a lead-off walk, Brandon Day followed with a single that pushed Cassise to third. Senior Darren Dworak drove in the first run on a single through the right side. Matt Winn picked up the next RBI with a fielder's choice that forced out Dworak at second.

In the pivotal sixth inning, CSUSB scored three runs on four hits and benefited from two CPP errors. Jake Pilkerton's two-out, two-run double to left center scored Haney (single) and Winn, who reached on a fielder's choice. Senior Paul Eshleman drove in Pilkerton with another double.

Day, Haney and Eshleman each had two hits.

The Coyotes' relief corps -- Josh Lee, Kyle Krogman and Kerry Kelley -- combined to threw four shutout innings with just two hits. Kelley earned his second save by retiring the side in order in the ninth.
