SAN BERNARDINO -- The UC San Diego softball team ended the 2011 Coyotes' campaign en route to winning a national championship.

On Friday, the 20th-ranked Tritons showed they are still a force to be reckoned with in the CCAA and the West Region.

The Coyotes were dealt a pair of mercy-rule defeats, losing 9-0 in the opener and 10-1 in the second game. CSUSB, which has lost six straight and have been dealt mercy-rule losses in four of their last six games, look to improve Saturday when the teams complete the weekend series.

First pitch is 12 p.m.

Box Score Game 1: UC San Diego 9, Coyotes 0 (6 innings)

The Coyotes threatened right away in the first inning off 2010-11 CCAA Female Athlete of the Year Camille Gaito as they had bases loaded with no outs.

But Gaito showed why she led the Tritons to the NCAA title as she struck out Jamie Leffingwell, Alyssa Flores and Courtney Wilhelms.

Coyotes freshman RHP Abreanna Landeros threw four innings of scoreless ball and did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. But in that inning, UCSD struck with five runs on six hits.

Pinch-hitters Monique Portugal hit a run-scoring single and Jennifer Manuel added a two-run double off Landeros that ended the freshman's day. Carly Land came in and gave up a two-homer to Kris Leshovsky and the Tritons were in control.

The Coyotes were led by Charlotte Galzote, who had two of the Coyotes' six hits. Wilhelms, Victoria Lievanos each singled and Brittney Ybarra had a double.

Box Score: Game 2: UC San Diego 10, Coyotes 1

Leshovsky had a double and home run  and Caitlin Brown added a home run as the Tritons earned the sweep.

Galzote had two hits with one RBI when she hit an infield single that scored Patty Masner, who reached on a hit by pitch.

Landeros took the loss in three innings. She is now 1-2 overall.
