SAN BERNARDINO – This weekend's series against Cal State L. A. proved to be a memorable one as the Coyotes earned the sweep over the Golden Eagles with 6-4 and 9-7 victories at Fiscalini Field on Saturday.
CSUSB (12-9 overall, 9-7 California Collegiate Athletic Association) will take a three-week break before facing Cal Poly Pomona in a four-game series that begins March 29 in Pomona.
The Coyotes hit .416 as a team in the four-game series and belted 16 extra-base hits with 32 runs batted in against the Golden Eagles (11-11, 7-9). Junior
Ethan Chapman was outstanding as he went 12-for-18 in the four games with four doubles, two triples and scored eight runs with a pair of stolen bases.
Teammate
Darren Dworak hit .571 (8-for-14) with three doubles and three RBI and senior
Brandon Day hit .563 (9-for-16) and extended his hitting streak to 12 consecutive.
Edwin Mendoza hit .375 with three home runs and
Paul Eshleman had two round-trippers.
Game 1: Coyotes 6, Cal State L.A. 4 (box score)
Dworak gave the Coyotes a 1-0 run lead when he ripped a double to left center that scored Day, who walked.
Then in the fifth, Dworak repeated his third-inning effort with another double to the same place, scoring Chapman, who walked to lead off the inning.
The Coyotes remained out front 2-0 until a four-run, three-hit seventh inning put them in command.
With two men on, Day singled to center that scored Chapman, who reached on an error. One out later, Mendoza sent a double down the left-field line that scored two and CSUSB led 5-0. After

Matt Winn's RBI-single scored Mendoza and the Coyotes led 6-0.
The Golden Eagles added a run in the eighth and Nick Rodarte's pinch-hit three-run homer in the ninth completed the game's scoring.
Coyotes LHP
Mike Mudron was very effective in six scoreless innings. He gave up three hits, walked three and struck out a season-high seven batters.
Sophomore LHP reliever
Kerry Kelley had two strikeouts in two innings.
Game 2: Coyotes 9, Cal State 7 (box score)
Trailing 9-4 entering the seventh inning, the Golden Eagles came back to score three in the seventh and had the bases loaded with one out, but Kelley struck out Jesus Cuevas and Cliff Quick to save the win and secure the sweep.
Eshleman gave the Coyotes a 3-0 lead in the second when he crushed a home run over the left-field wall off Golden Eagles' ace Gabriel Askura.
CSULA tied the game with a run in the fourth and consecutive home runs from Cliff Quick and Daniel Duran in the fifth.
CSUSB regained the lead on Pilkerton's single to right in the fifth and the Coyotes scored another run in the inning on
Matt Haney's fielder's choice that scored Mendoza.
CSULA answered with a run in the sixth to cut CSUSB's lead 5-4, but the Coyotes seemingly took control with a four-run sixth.
Chapman doubled to center and came around to score on Day's single to center. Dworak followed with a singled and Mendoza walked to load the bases. Day scored on a wild pitch and Pilkerton earned another RBI with a single to left.
Haney was next up and he singled in Mendoza and CSUSB led 9-4.
In the CSULA seventh, Duran led off the inning with a home run to straightaway center and the Golden Eagles scored two more runs until Kelley earned the save.
Senior RHP
Bryant Hollingsworth (1-0) threw five innings, gave up six hits, three runs with one strikeout for the victory.
